What were the NVA and Viet Cong's rationales during the Vietnam War?

Opposition to French/American imperialism? Nationalism? Ambitious leaders? Mistreatment by American Forces? I was just wondering why North Vietnam had the morale to perpetuate the conflict even after tactical debacles such as the Tet Offensive.
